The relevant legislation relating to this training course is known as 'The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012'.

To accompany the regulations the Health & Safety Executive also produce documents to help you to comply with these Regulations.

These are called Approved Codes of Practice known as ACoPs.

ACoPs state clearly that all employees must be trained to a satisfactory standard and that training should cover information relevant to the work they undertake. This training course will cover the topics and legal requirements relating to ACoP L143. It will also assist you to comply with legal work practices.

The current legislation states that: Every employer must make sure that anyone who is liable to disturb asbestos during their normal work, or who supervises those employees, receives the correct level of training so that they can work safely and competently without risk to themselves or others.

Workers and supervisors must be able to recognise ACMs and know exactly what to do in order to protect themselves and others. 

There are three main levels of training these relate to:

1. Asbestos awareness
2. Non Licensed work
3. Licensed work

Training for asbestos awareness is intended to give workers and supervisors the information they need to avoid work that may disturb ACMs, the fabric of a building, or any item, which contains asbestos.

It will NOT prepare workers, or self-employed contractors, to carry out ANY work on ACMs. If a worker IS planning to carry out work that may disturb ACMs, more extensive training will be needed.

Workers who need this level of training include those whose work will require them to disturb or remove ACMs considered to be ‘lower risk’, such as:

• Drilling holes in ACMs 
• Laying cables in areas containing undamaged ACMs
• Removing asbestos-containing floor tiles
• Cleaning or repairing asbestos cement products.

Most work with ‘higher risk’ ACMs must be carried out by licensed contractors.

Only trained workers and managers, provided with the relevant training and using appropriate RPE and PPE, may undertake licensed asbestos work.

The following types of ACMs should only be worked on by fully trained HSE licensed asbestos removal contractors:

• Sprayed coatings used for fire and heat protection
• Asbestos insulation / lagging commonly used for heat protection
• Asbestos Insulation Boards (AIB) used for fire resistance and protection

The objective is to provide you with an awareness of asbestos and develop your knowledge with regard to the hazards and risks posed by ACMs found in buildings.

The course will also provide you with an overview of the legislative measures in place to permit employees to safeguard themselves and others.

This course will also familiarise you with the document known as The Asbestos Register.

• Have an increased awareness of the nature and properties of asbestos and its effects on health. This includes the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke.
• Be familiar with the types, uses and likely locations of asbestos in buildings, plant and equipment.
• Know how to avoid the risks from asbestos by understanding the following; 
• Where to obtain information on asbestos in premises prior to commencing work;
• What to do if suspicious materials are found;
• How to use appropriate workplace precautions, and seek advice regarding the risks of asbestos;
